Label generation rules for the Internet's root zone for African scripts
Abstract
ICANN is working to promote the use of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN). This work will allow domain names to be completely represented in local languages and scripts of the world, by developing rules to determine valid and unique top-level domains (TLDs). As per the guidance of the community, this is being achieved by organizing script based panels to determine these linguistic rules for the different scripts and languages of the world. ICANN is organizing script-based panel, e.g. for Chinese, Thai, Cyrillic, and other scripts. Ethiopian community recently organized a group to determine the rules for forming TLDs in the Ethiopic script. The purpose of the proposed session is to give more information on IDN work and showcase the leadership of academia in Ethiopia, and to invite the community to contribute to other relevant panels, e.g. Latin script panel, to allow support of other languages of Africa.
